How GPS Tracker Installation Works, Step by Step

If you have never had a tracker fitted, the process can feel like a black box. In reality it is straightforward, and knowing what to expect helps you tell a careful, professional job from a rushed one. Here is what installation looks like from booking to a fully live vehicle on your map.

Step 1 — Booking and vehicle assessment

It begins with a short conversation about your vehicle and what you want from tracking — recovery and engine lock, fuel monitoring, driver behaviour, or simple location visibility. This determines the right device and where it should go. For a single car you might visit a branch; for a fleet, technicians are typically scheduled to come to your yard so vehicles are fitted with minimal disruption to operations.

Step 2 — The physical install

For a hard-wired tracker, a certified technician connects the device to the vehicle's electrical system — power, ground and ignition — and, where engine lock is included, to the relay that controls the starter or fuel circuit. The unit is placed out of sight so it is not obvious to a thief, and any fuel sensor or additional wiring is routed neatly and secured. A good technician takes the time to conceal the device properly and tidy the wiring; a concealed, tidy install is a sign the job was done with care.

Step 3 — Activation and testing

Once wired, the device is activated on the platform and linked to your account. The technician confirms that live location is reporting, ignition on/off is detected correctly, and — if fitted — that engine lock responds safely and any fuel sensor reads sensibly. This testing step matters: it is the difference between a device that is merely installed and one that is verified working before the vehicle leaves.

Step 4 — Handover and first login

With the vehicle live, you get access to the portal and mobile app and a walkthrough of the basics — finding a vehicle on the live map, replaying a trip, and setting up the alerts and geofences that matter to you. From this point the vehicle appears alongside the rest of your fleet, and you can add team members with the right roles if others need access.

What about self-install OBD trackers?

OBD trackers skip the technician entirely. You plug the unit into the vehicle's OBD-II port, usually under the dashboard, and it powers on and starts reporting within minutes — no wiring, no appointment. It is the fastest route to tracking and easy to move between vehicles, which is why it suits company cars and short-term needs. The trade-offs are the ones covered elsewhere: the port is easy to unplug, and it lacks the concealed, immobilizer-capable install of a hard-wired unit.

How long does it take?

A single hard-wired install is typically a matter of an hour or so per vehicle, depending on the device and any sensors, while an OBD unit takes minutes. For fleets, technicians work through vehicles in sequence at your yard. Either way, the goal is the same: a vehicle that is concealed where it should be, verified working before you drive away, and live on your map from day one.
